The rumour mill first started churning with news that Apple was paying closer attention to augmented reality in 2015. Through many years of speculation, it was at WWDC 2023, that Apple finally announced its long-awaited headset. Called Apple Vision Pro, the company says this is a new chapter, the first spatial computing device.Here's everything you need to know.

It's pretty difficult to miss the excitement surrounding WWDC 2023 right now, with Apple's big opening keynote on 5 June expected to signal Apple's entry into a whole new product category. And that's before we get into the talk of new Macs and software updates.That new product category is the world of the AR/VR headset, with Apple's entry thought to be called Reality Pro. All of the smart money right now seems to be on Apple unveiling the headset at its WWDC event and then giving developers a few months to get their apps ready before it goes on sale later this year. And with the Reality Pro headset now thought to be just days away, a new leak claims to have shared details about the displays that it will use. And if accurate, that leak makes for some very interesting reading indeed.

Apple's rumored entry into the AR/VR space has been thrown into doubt, with the expected WWDC23 unveiling now possibly not happening. The so-called Reality Pro headset is said to be causing concern internally, possibly causing the launch to be delayed.WWDC23 has been confirmed for a 5 June kick-off, with reports suggesting that Apple would out the headset during the opening keynote. But a report by supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests that Apple is having second thoughts, with mass production already delayed.

The Meta Quest 2 has had a 120Hz refresh rate as an experimental feature for quite some time. This faster refresh rate in theory means a smoother experience and less chance of motion sickness when playing VR games. In a Tweet, John Carmack, former Consulting CTO of Oculus VR revealed that the 120Hz display mode would be turned on by default:

Owners of the original Meta Quest VR headset have begun to receive emails warning them that it will no longer receive new feature updates, and some are even going away.Users across social media have reported that they have received an email from Meta, giving them the nod that while new features won't be forthcoming there will at least be some updates - the headset will receive “critical bug fixes and security patches until 2024.”The Quest 1 will of course keep working as long as required, but The Verge notes that users won't be able to create or join parties, while those “who currently have access to Meta Horizon Home social features will lose access to these features on March 5, 2023.”

Apple's been taking its sweet time as far as its entry into the world of AR and VR is concerned, with its putative headset the subject of rumours for literally years and years at this point.

The Meta Quest 2 keeps getting better and better it seems.Meta recently announced that it was allowing developers to take advantage of more GPU performance, pushing the Quest 2's GPU frequency from 490 MHz to 525 Mhz.This equates to seven per cent more power which in turn leads to a smoother experience and an improved frame rate for the end user.
